PROJECT A-10
In Situ Bioremediation of Crude Oil & Refinery Wastes
Tar Pit Project, Poza Rico, Mexico
PROBLEM:
Marsh contaminated by refinery
For many years, refinery and oil field wastes had been released into a
marsh adjacent to a residential area. A diked pond in the marsh
contained a 10' deep mixture of 60% oil-tar in water. Approximately
8,000 cubic yards of soil were contaminated.
SOLUTION AND RESULTS:
Bio treatment program with MicroSorb® Microbes, Nutrients, Biocatalyst
Using a heavy duty slurry pump, a microbial consortium, nutrients, and
a biocatalyst were mixed with the contaminated soils and water. In
essence, the pond was converted into a giant bioreactor. When the
concentration of TPH in the mix reached 18,000 PPM, the soils were
removed from the pond and land farmed offsite. When the concentration
of TPH in the land farmed soils was reduced to 300 PPM, the soils were
returned to the diked area.
The total time of treatment was 120 days.
